It was yet another happy consequence of family members getting in touch with me following an ozTypewriter post. In this case, it was a post titled "Calamity-less Julia, Her Typewriter and The Black Hills of
Dakota" which was published on February 4 last year. The post included a newspaper image showing <span style="background-color: white;">Julia at the Wilge Nursing Home in Mitchell, 175 miles east of her beloved Midland. She died there in June 1978, aged 95. In the clipping, she looked just like she does here, so these photos may have been taken at late as 1975.</span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: white;">In July last year Julia's great-niece by marriage, Jinny Talledge, commented on the post. A few days later, another great niece, Rhonda Talledge Mataczynski, got in touch to say, "</span>Aunt Julia was my father’s aunt and a fun lady to visit. I
remember her being a tall imposing woman with a very sharp wit. We often took
her brothers - my grandfather Ben and brother Roy - out to Midland to see her. My
father was a pastor and history teacher and was a favourite of hers. Thank you
for all this info. Some of it I remember. I know that my father was extremely
proud of his Aunt Julia and they corresponded right up to her death."</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNU2QJviYLuc2D2h3IYMFJj-T0QvlT5etcBdJ4pKXeCbMBXAf6Yndq525j07E6WU2kC6fTYkBIgCqdayhI33Mj5sSt77qZf60n4KEogOse1aZ6Fr_hYd6lC0RUqekDIfsEBh8yKVvF1mCyiFcj1Q_31s-DanM-mK-VUiPZhWqU2L9xYHwiGRHPUvMFOn_r/s3220/image2.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3220" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNU2QJviYLuc2D2h3IYMFJj-T0QvlT5etcBdJ4pKXeCbMBXAf6Yndq525j07E6WU2kC6fTYkBIgCqdayhI33Mj5sSt77qZf60n4KEogOse1aZ6Fr_hYd6lC0RUqekDIfsEBh8yKVvF1mCyiFcj1Q_31s-DanM-mK-VUiPZhWqU2L9xYHwiGRHPUvMFOn_r/w602-h640/image2.jpeg" width="602" /></a></div><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">Last month Laurie Cox wrote "Thank you for this posting. My husband and I own the Stroppel
Hotel and Mineral Baths in Midland, SD. I am working on the application to put
the hotel on the national registry. Julia Talledge has repeatedly come up. I had
a niece of Julia's come visit the hotel. At that time I did not have the
information to know how influential and how strong of a woman that Julia
Talledge was. I wish I had that personal visit back with her niece. I plan to do themed historical rooms here in the hotel and you
can bet that Julia Talledge will be on the list of Midland's most influential
people." Laurie then offered to send me pictures of Julia’s typewriter from an exhibit in the Midland Museum.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">In 1907 the adventurous Julia settled in a shack at <span style="background-color: white;">Mitchell Creek outside Midland, a small rural town in the south-eastern corner of Haakon County. was published on March 13, 2019, under the heading, “Betsy Beaton, The Boy With
Green Hair and the Underwood 6 Typewriter”. There wasn’t a lot in it about
typewriters, but it took many, many hours of research to identify the lady in
the photo with the Underwood standard – and her achievements. The end result was satisfying to say the least. The post opened, “On
the 30th anniversary of the World Wide Web, I went through an exhaustive
exercise of exploring the Internet’s many failings, its virtues and the
boundless opportunities it offers.” My old friend Bill MacLane commented, “Congratulations
on another fine investigative report on someone new to me. I'm always amazed at
how good you are at finding information on relatively unknown (at least to me)
people and such detail you are able to post.”<o:p></o:p></span><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">Earlier this year I had cause to comment on Instagram and Facebook,
“One of the best things about [blogging] is making contact, through comments,
with descendants of people who have featured in past posts … [including] the
grand-daughter of Betsy Beaton, who wrote 'The Boy With the Green
Hair' … There was almost nothing online about Betsy Beaton until I
researched her life story, and now I notice the IMDb, which previously had no
details, has updated its entry on Betsy using info from ozTypewriter - without,
of course, any acknowledgement. But, then, that goes for images I see almost
daily on Instagram. I suppose I should be glad to be of service!”<o:p></o:p></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 107%;">This was in response to a message on Instagram from Susan Forman, saying, "</span>Hello
Robert, I cannot thank you enough for your wonderful piece entitled, 'Betsy Beaton, The Boy With Green Hair and the Underwood 6
Typewriter'. If possible, I would love to have your email address. 'Wendy', Betsy's daughter, is my mother, technically mother-in-law,
but we are very close and this article has meant the world to her. She too,
would love to contact you." Needless to say, I've heard no more.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">But this week I received another comment on the Betsy Beaton post.
“KL” wrote, “This is incredible! Your post was exactly what I'd been searching
for regarding the life of Betsy Beaton. I was wondering ... do you know where I
can get a copy of her short story, ‘The Boy with Green Hair’? I was trying to
locate it online with no luck. I see you have an excerpt here. I'd really like
to read it all. I just found a copy of ‘Another Man's Shoes’ online and I'm
tempted to buy it. I'm curious to read it as well.” The line I liked best was, "<o:p></o:p></span></span><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">Thanks for taking the time to recognize a woman writer who was
obviously undervalued at the time (and still is)."</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; font-size: 20pt; line-height: 107%;"><o:p></o:p></span></p>

One man responsible for much of that work was Jefferson Moody Clough (1829-1908). The 1916 <i>Encyclopedia of Massachusetts</i> states Clough was also “paid handsomely” to perfect the Hammond and Yōst typewriters.</span><p></p><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: georgia;">Above is the only known photograph of Clough, the man who <a style="color: #385898; cursor: pointer;" tabindex="-1"></a>deserves as much credit as anyone for the successful launch of the typewriter on July 1, 1874. It was under Clough’s supervision that E. Remington & Sons of Ilion, New York, was able to mass produce a marketable machine from the crudely-made early versions of the Sholes & Glidden. Outside of Latham Sholes and Carlos Glidden themselves, Clough was one of only two people who were paid royalties in the typewriter’s earliest years – in Clough’s case 50 cents for every machine sold. Sholes and Glidden got a dollar each. A third dollar went to Charles Ames Washburn for his carriage movement patent - the </span><span style="font-family: georgia;">royalties came from each $125 typewriter sale, but the $3.50 was to be paid from just $12 a machine which flowed through to James Densmore and George Y</span><span style="font-family: georgia;">ō</span><span style="font-family: georgia;">st's Type-Writer Company<b> </b>from Remington. </span></span></div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">At the time of his retirement from the Winchester Repeating Arms Company in New Haven, Connecticut, on September 1, 1892, Clough was nationally known as “The Gunmaker of Ilion”. His work on the Sholes & Glidden, Remington 1 and 2 and Hammond and Yōst typewriters had all but been forgotten. Newspapers reported he had been “intimately associated all his life with the development of the two best American rifles, the Remington and Winchester”. In 1904 he perfected a Clough Mauser Gun, the rights to which were bought to stop it going into production and competing in the marketplace with the like of Remington and Winchester.</span></div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">Clough left Remington at the most important period in China’s so-called “Self-Strengthening Movement” (1861-1895) - its development of military industries and the construction of arsenals sponsored by the central government. Qing dynasty statesman and general Li Hongzhang wanted the Jiangnan Arsenal to produce breech loading rifles of the Remington type but the few local products made were more costly and far inferior to the imported rifles. During the Ili crisis, when Qing China threatened to go to war against Russia over the Russian occupation of Ili, China bought 260,260 modern rifles from Europe and offered Jefferson Clough a vast amount of money to oversee its arsenals. </span></div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">Clough declined the Chinese offer and instead accepted $7500 a year ($250,000 in today’s money) to work for Winchester in New Haven. Ill health forced his retirement in 1892 and Clough retired to the 500-acre Phelps farm at Belchertown, Massachusetts. He began to recover his health in 1894 but died of bowel cancer at Belchertown on January 16, 1908, aged 78.</span></div>Robert Messengerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04366507489948676594noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5248447883714712696.post-13418946533169281412023-02-12T14:27:00.000+11:002023-02-12T14:27:23.959+11:00In The Name of the Father of the Typewriter<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: helvetica;">The 1864 Mitterhofer machine was on show in the exhibition "Mountains, People and the Economy of the
Ostmark" in 1939.</span></div></span><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #262626;">Today the 200th anniversary of the birth of early typewriter inventor Peter Mitterhofer is being marked in his home town of Parcines in the Tyrol. In August 1925 US newspapers ran a story from Innsbruck saying a memorial tablet had been unveiled at Mitterhoffer’s home. The story claimed Mitterhofer was <i>THE</i> inventor of the typewriter, and went on to state that Carlos Glidden had seen Mitterhofer’s machine at the Imperial Polytechnic Institute at Vienna and given the idea to Latham Sholes and Samuel Soulé. That is to say, the Sholes & Glidden was a <i>COPY</i> of Mitterhofer’s machine. This caused huge indignation in America. In October 1925, US newspaper stories headed “Exposes attempt to discredit famous American inventor” explaimed how Colonel John Wright Vrooman (1844-1929), president of the Herkimer County Historical Association, had proved that Glidden had never been outside the US and had never heard of Mitterhofer. Vrooman had “defeated a foreign attempt to take the honor [of inventing the typewriter] from America.”</span></span><div><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: georgia;"><span style="color: #262626;">Ninety-seven years on, however, Mitterhofer's Wikipedia entry still says, "T</span><span style="line-height: 107%;">echnical details of his developments were
patented by Sholes and Glidden in the US in 1868
independently of Mitterhofer as an in-house development and created the basis
for the series production of the first usable typewriters ...</span> Professor Rudolf
Granichstaedten-Czerva, who published a biography of Peter Mitterhofer in 1924, [said] <span style="line-height: 107%;">Mitterhofer experienced the success of the typewriters
manufactured in the US by Sholes, but without having any
part in it. On August 27, 1893, he died bitter. On his tombstone is the saying: '</span></span><span style="font-family: georgia;">The others who learned from him were
allowed to </span><span style="font-family: georgia; line-height: 107%;">reap the
fruits of his talent'.</span><span style="font-family: georgia; line-height: 107%;"> </span><span style="font-family: georgia; line-height: 107%;">It was
probably the great similarity of Mitterhofer's models with the models produced
in America by the Remington company that prompted the Innsbruck professor to write the saying on the tombstone." All of which, of course, is utter nonsense.</span></span><div><p></p><p><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: georgia; the British Industries Fair at Olympia in London. The typewriter is an
Empire Aristocrat with 18-carat gold key rings and typebars (which Gary’s doesn’t
have). The Aristocrat was presented to the future Queen by a Mrs S.S. Elliott,

Typewriters, in West Bromwich. It was from this plant, originally established as
George Salter’s Spring Works, that in 1878 the West Bromwich Albion football
club emerged, out of the company’s cricket team. In 1935 Mawle, a World War I
flying ace (and later Group Captain Mawle OBE DFC), was sales manager for the
Imperial Typewriter Company in Leicester. He was sent to a trade show in
Switzerland and there spotted a new slimline portable typewriter, later to
become famous as the Hermes Baby. Mawle bought the British rights to the design
for £3000 and returned to Britain to begin manufacturing at the then abandoned
Sattler factory. Mawle’s company, later known as Empire Typewriters, was sold
to the American typewriter concern L.C. Smith Corona in 1962.</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 20pt;"><o:p></o:p></span><p></p>Robert Messengerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04366507489948676594noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5248447883714712696.post-52897467896692632832022-09-18T11:57:00.000+10:002022-09-18T11:57:01.405+10:00WD-40 and Typewriters: Never the Twain Should Meet<p><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOPv84w1rHF1kETixtkzSzomX4kUqX-eRYd36dnIdXM6kCAhGM-uMJLjmfUOtLrzLn5Uq4-pA82luXh_q4q90GaftCZc2tB5A4qqTa8_ppbcumgnR4xljfkdhLkJSyljYUhtUC-IUFM_HmTuLgEOYs4ZyT1v5DEVwd1ymcszKqnls_3laNd8rq4DKSiQ/s3158/IMG_2779.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2712" data-original-width="3158" height="550" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOPv84w1rHF1kETixtkzSzomX4kUqX-eRYd36dnIdXM6kCAhGM-uMJLjmfUOtLrzLn5Uq4-pA82luXh_q4q90GaftCZc2tB5A4qqTa8_ppbcumgnR4xljfkdhLkJSyljYUhtUC-IUFM_HmTuLgEOYs4ZyT1v5DEVwd1ymcszKqnls_3laNd8rq4DKSiQ/w640-h550/IMG_2779.JPG" width="640" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;">Whenever I fix a typewriter, I offer the customer free after-service
care. Yesterday, for the first time, that offer was taken up. Three years ago I
had worked on a 70-year-old Royal HHP standard which had been bought for a
Canberra woman by her mother-in-law, from the San Francisco Typewriter Exchange.
Last week the owner contacted me to say the keys and typebars wouldn’t move.
She wasn’t wrong. It would have taken a sledgehammer to get them operational.</span><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;">The owner said she had no knowledge of anyone spraying
anything into the segment. But, from experience, that is exactly what had
happened. And the guilty item: WD-40! WD-40 is a water dispersant spray, not a
lubricant. WD-40 shouldn’t be allowed within a 100 miles of a typewriter, the keys
and typebars of which work through a combination of a multitude of gears, levers and
springs and good ol’ gravity. Allow WD-40 anywhere near those gears, lever connections
and springs, or the groves of the segment, and you’re asking for big, big
problems. WD-40 works like Lanolin, it congeals and clogs.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;">It took 24 hours of serious bubble bathing, relubricating and much
gentle manual persuasion to get the keys and typebars working properly again. Today’s
lesson? Never use WD-40 as a lubricant. And never, ever, use it on a typewriter.</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 20pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></p>Robert Messengerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04366507489948676594noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5248447883714712696.post-898704618063573922022-08-13T16:46:00.000+10:002022-08-13T16:46:00.528+10:00When Jeff Missed Out To The Typewriter Guy<p><span style="font-size: x-large;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: georgia; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5uZbohHrl1DjolBea--GihipEh5amIkEvbBDqe1r4CDMmoHYKgL5Wxj3C4d_JfPnbrN1ipsHjc-TmiPU5lqma5dFc1q4uxoltbv1hNyo9N6hIGDH3emKBg4pHTu8Z75S7Pix3dHQSmNNFBM4voRnCxjofqavLfjf8rlTplRoD9kSKHqowN5RxrNLDsw/s882/jeff3.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="882" data-original-width="689" height="894" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5uZbohHrl1DjolBea--GihipEh5amIkEvbBDqe1r4CDMmoHYKgL5Wxj3C4d_JfPnbrN1ipsHjc-TmiPU5lqma5dFc1q4uxoltbv1hNyo9N6hIGDH3emKBg4pHTu8Z75S7Pix3dHQSmNNFBM4voRnCxjofqavLfjf8rlTplRoD9kSKHqowN5RxrNLDsw/w700-h894/jeff3.PNG" width="700" /></a></div><span style="font-family: georgia;">While I was cleaning up this Remington Noiseless portable for
today’s typewriter presentation, I came across what I at first took to be a bit
of foliage or piece of cloth buried inside the workings of the machine. Nothing
unusual in that. I brushed it out and only some time later looked more closely
at it - and realised it was a typed slip of paper. “Do you love me or Jeff” was
the plaintive cry of the guy who once owned this lovely machine. “No” the
future Mrs Typewriter Guy seems to have written on it in pencil. I’m taking it
to mean she didn’t love Jeff, just the Typewriter Guy. Lovers of typewriters,
after all, make the best lovers. He also used a Smith-Corona electric portable in that film, and it wasn't the only movie in which Caan used a typewriter. He was seen typing on an L.C. Smith in 1975's <i>Funny Girl</i>, in which he played impresario and theatrical showman Billy Rose, opposite Barbra Streisand as comedienne Fanny Brice, Rose's first wife, and also in Neil Simon's semi-autobographical<i> Chapter Two</i> in 1979, in which Caan played George Schneider, a New York City author. In this movie Caan was also using a Royal, but a much more modern Ultronic electric. <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 107%;">Seven years ago, Writing New South Wales tweeted that “dinkus”
was a “new word from today”. It was at least 90 years behind the times, possibly
as much as 140 years and maybe even 160 years. My own efforts to find the
origin of the word dinkus, as I know it, relied in March 2011 on Australia’s <i>Macquarie
Dictionary</i>, which said: “A dinkus is a small drawing used in printing to
decorate a page, or to break up a block of type. It was coined by an artist on
[Sydney’s] <i>The Bulletin</i> magazine in the 1920s, and it is derived from
the word dinky, meaning ‘small’.” I now find that in 1952, the Melbourne <i>Herald</i>'s head proof reader, Charles Crampton, said there was a printers' embossing tool called a "dinkus-and-die", with a "dinking" tool which fitted perfectly into the die. "Hence we get a 'dinky-die fit'." So from dinkus came the Australian term "dinkie-die", meaning straight and true ("It's not a lie, it's dinkie-die"), as well as the expression "fair dinkum" ("Fair dinkum, I use a typewriter all the time"). The <i>Herald </i>j</span>ournalist,
social commentator and activist E.W.Tipping said, "Printers call a small picture used to fill up a space in the compositor's forme a dinkus, the latter getting its name obviously from it being used to wedge tightly the type."</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;"> Wiktionary gets it right by describing dinkus
as “A small drawing or artwork used for decoration in a magazine or periodical”.
In print newspapers in the hot metal days, a dinkus was usually used to give the eyes a
momentary rest from reading a page of “grey matter” – that is, columns of a small
black typeface on a light background. Wikipedia gets it wrong by confining dinkus
to “a typographic symbol which often consists of three spaced asterisks in a
horizontal row … The symbol has a variety of uses, and it usually denotes an
intentional omission or a logical ‘break’ of varying degree in a written work.”
Wikipedia compounds its mistake by adding, “In Australian English, particularly
in the news media, the word refers to a small photograph of the author of a
news article. Outside of Australia, this is often referred to as a headshot.”
Wiki is most decidedly wrong on this count.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;">Last month (June), <i>The New Yorker</i> featured typewriter
use in dinkuses (it calls them “spots”), one (seen at the top of this post) above a wonderful tribute to the late Roger
Angell (“That Titian of the Typewriter”), written by the incomparable David
Remnick, the other among the regular “spots” that run through the magazine, in
this case showing people writing using all manner of machines and methods. </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 20pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitybM3dOZVpPQ92i8U0fSB7wsUux49ZRjBvkARefaiweoCCnjdi8bVJMb0PuwEiBCnVi6pfC6tbhIaf6fMc6USAdUyKAu1OdgiVs8YthOvwPmanyCJ_F-fPg4ieqdtSjgfob8tZZYpXo5sT6KE7q317uiAMcQkSucxgoDnTj0iuzAMvGAJnScv4UzDPg/s638/nyerspot.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="316" data-original-width="638" height="316" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitybM3dOZVpPQ92i8U0fSB7wsUux49ZRjBvkARefaiweoCCnjdi8bVJMb0PuwEiBCnVi6pfC6tbhIaf6fMc6USAdUyKAu1OdgiVs8YthOvwPmanyCJ_F-fPg4ieqdtSjgfob8tZZYpXo5sT6KE7q317uiAMcQkSucxgoDnTj0iuzAMvGAJnScv4UzDPg/w640-h316/nyerspot.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;">This last one was not entirely "new", as a similar idea had been used to advertise the Bar-Let portable typewriter in 1934:</span><p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeYFoPr0D95FWzy59_MeugqRQb2_VUCeXnfSnacHxDnNkgPO697vseTIm8Ce2fHm0k5rrX-XlWhG7QuhP4il37Thv9MYkchrtbSE2c8BW_iZuCjO8grYuMYQfjjZ7_FkYsUivStwiztXQ9FsLolnPHetirirWCSeOPnWgbu73CAQUWf9f1br1xRewGWg/s357/bar%20let.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="200" data-original-width="357" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeYFoPr0D95FWzy59_MeugqRQb2_VUCeXnfSnacHxDnNkgPO697vseTIm8Ce2fHm0k5rrX-XlWhG7QuhP4il37Thv9MYkchrtbSE2c8BW_iZuCjO8grYuMYQfjjZ7_FkYsUivStwiztXQ9FsLolnPHetirirWCSeOPnWgbu73CAQUWf9f1br1xRewGWg/w640-h358/bar%20let.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>Robert Messengerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04366507489948676594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5248447883714712696.post-69127880973326976012022-06-28T16:04:00.000+10:002022-06-28T16:04:36.419+10:00Vale Frank Moorhouse (1938-2022)<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjylBFl57bquJYwM1FpNJG1LuaRcIio84L0S7bsjUD2srxOmpoVSegQlSEf8-2Yrax6es18yH5Jl1BG7X5sSrfuybApJzbmncDpPS-IFTpAPzNM2qaxElgjiA7rXqJe_1A-Sm8iMtV2cVeaTSVrBfS5v03D2MAH3R_C7wwUirqryp9r-u4Unz09n0En7g/s872/fm1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="641" data-original-width="872" height="470" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjylBFl57bquJYwM1FpNJG1LuaRcIio84L0S7bsjUD2srxOmpoVSegQlSEf8-2Yrax6es18yH5Jl1BG7X5sSrfuybApJzbmncDpPS-IFTpAPzNM2qaxElgjiA7rXqJe_1A-Sm8iMtV2cVeaTSVrBfS5v03D2MAH3R_C7wwUirqryp9r-u4Unz09n0En7g/w640-h470/fm1.PNG" width="640" /></a></div><p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;">Frank Moorhouse, one of Australia’s most celebrated and

days before Christmas 1938. His New Zealand-born father, electrical engineer, dairy
machine inventor and manufacturer Frank Osborne Moorhouse, moved to Australia
in 1925. The younger Frank began his working life in 1955 as a cadet reporter
on Sydney’s <i>Daily Telegraph</i> and from 1957 worked as a journalist for the
<i>Wagga Wagga Advertiser</i>, <i>Riverina Express</i>, <i>Lockhart Review </i>and
<i>Boorowa News</i>. At 18 he published his first short story, “The Young Girl
and the American Sailor”, in <i>Southerly</i> magazine. Moorhouse lived for
many years in the Sydney suburb of Balmain, where together with Clive James,
Germaine Greer and Robert Hughes he became part of the “Sydney Push” - an
anti-censorship movement that protested against right-wing politics and
championed freedom of speech and sexual liberation. </span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd2g1f64BcKlwjbbmpc-Jn3VZmPkDDkUCXHsQn-BzXc-DRtXQ9WeBrW8D2j7XcU5PDQQj0nHqTCUxRitczDAEKUy_kz9wn-aeU21seKobgcaI96hFoQ2Siwq1Lg2GqGmlVjci19pU9UCVOzNnanANm2Kpe6whUWDXVF_MYJXPBurs7jVWNWgEEK8yvvg/s1187/vlcj.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="616" data-original-width="1187" height="332" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd2g1f64BcKlwjbbmpc-Jn3VZmPkDDkUCXHsQn-BzXc-DRtXQ9WeBrW8D2j7XcU5PDQQj0nHqTCUxRitczDAEKUy_kz9wn-aeU21seKobgcaI96hFoQ2Siwq1Lg2GqGmlVjci19pU9UCVOzNnanANm2Kpe6whUWDXVF_MYJXPBurs7jVWNWgEEK8yvvg/w640-h332/vlcj.JPG" width="640" /></a><span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: helvetica;"><div style="text-align: center;">Clive James at a Remington Rand.</div></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDd00KZWNbOPG-Gq7ZkpQe7A47bTzt2deK0hCkbAoF866nPJbetWyLfQ7DPBWkFA3iaWdtqQyggO8arTgkZZcN1uR8TANghjVdt5RvuYNUEzW0qzcWZcMARMuzg_KOe4GPR04lfytNIxjG32rYeXrnMlY30eLEU0oQhU-YhKp0AF4DHGC8xabAKlRLaQ/s1000/gg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="650" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDd00KZWNbOPG-Gq7ZkpQe7A47bTzt2deK0hCkbAoF866nPJbetWyLfQ7DPBWkFA3iaWdtqQyggO8arTgkZZcN1uR8TANghjVdt5RvuYNUEzW0qzcWZcMARMuzg_KOe4GPR04lfytNIxjG32rYeXrnMlY30eLEU0oQhU-YhKp0AF4DHGC8xabAKlRLaQ/w416-h640/gg.jpg" width="416" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: helvetica;">Germaine Greer.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjSFOxLzRVOH-7iGAi3abn1K65Ox7QcU15_Gc3EWtM6fIfW7oRAygi-cOxVGT5ATTgrn1gjpWf7bzBEbZXOiUHYvP9JR4g2WoF1zOphhBpS_SvkIPgU67WMvCqn2ZCzqWvydcxOFzDvczhrOf8LptSFHtSL8q8-bkptzxWhNylc5OdmLTrPs-0d1ESUw/s400/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="275" data-original-width="400" height="440" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjSFOxLzRVOH-7iGAi3abn1K65Ox7QcU15_Gc3EWtM6fIfW7oRAygi-cOxVGT5ATTgrn1gjpWf7bzBEbZXOiUHYvP9JR4g2WoF1zOphhBpS_SvkIPgU67WMvCqn2ZCzqWvydcxOFzDvczhrOf8LptSFHtSL8q8-bkptzxWhNylc5OdmLTrPs-0d1ESUw/w640-h440/1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: helvetica;">Robert Hughes at an Olivetti Lettera 32.</span></div>Robert Messengerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04366507489948676594noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5248447883714712696.post-4128107581222699642022-06-14T15:39:00.000+10:002022-06-14T15:39:19.482+10:00Searing Cutlass Typewriter in Taylor Swift Short<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="line-height: 107%;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: "14thGeorgia", serif; font-size: 16pt; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-Ma1bLUw-M4A49tvNaZRLzvn2Vjw4Yr9eji4enw9HYrKOqtyBl_gfr6Omu2Oh-Ey9oBp7dsWVBF9hJ1LNt5t-efD6HLiU4ebuBlROhWEUGIUrGJRgqWeq04sKOtQndWbi1jS2g8766W1BV1SqLhXe9nkWFekPPrWCucJYFW9Sl5K0LrYAS_iA0QX-Qg/s1179/ts1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="775" data-original-width="1179" height="466" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-Ma1bLUw-M4A49tvNaZRLzvn2Vjw4Yr9eji4enw9HYrKOqtyBl_gfr6Omu2Oh-Ey9oBp7dsWVBF9hJ1LNt5t-efD6HLiU4ebuBlROhWEUGIUrGJRgqWeq04sKOtQndWbi1jS2g8766W1BV1SqLhXe9nkWFekPPrWCucJYFW9Sl5K0LrYAS_iA0QX-Qg/w711-h466/ts1.PNG" width="711" /></a></div><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;">Taylor Swift last week

million page views at 8.22 last night, June 8, and to celebrate the milestone
we popped the cork on a bottle of Veuve Clicquot. A bit extravagant? Well, it’s
been a long slog, 2917 posts in more than 11 years. The five-million mark
has been both a goal and a cut-off point for me for some time now. My original intention was to stop
blogging altogether, but with encouraging comments from the like of Ted, Joe, Bill and Dave, I’ve
decided to merely apply the brakes, pull over and idle for a while. It’s not
exactly a hibernation, certainly not a complete closure, but just slow-down time. I
may, as Ted suggested, decide to turn off comments, for no other reason than that between
blogging and fixing typewriters, I never have enough time to respond to all
comments, or reply to emails for that matter. Plus, if everything goes

become a bit of a yoke around my neck, so the plan is to continue posting, but
only occasionally, certainly not with the same <span style="background-color: white; color: #202124;">regularity</span> with which I’ve tried
to post since the end of February 2011. Before reaching five million page
views, I simply hadn’t been able to get to all the posts I had planned to write
– there are probably 30 or 40 ideas still floating about in this study, all of which I still intend to
get to one day before I die. For all that, I do wonder about the ongoing
relevance of ozTypewriter – online interest in typewriters, as reflected in the
various social media sites and platforms, has definitely changed considerably
since I started blogging. Sometimes the page view numbers just straggled along
and I found myself urging on this "turning point". Blogging began to feel a
little like too much hard work for scant return.<o:p></o:p></span><p></p>

And I've got it typing beautifully, too. I did the scan above without putting in new ribbon, and one can imagine how brittle the ribbon has become after being in the machine for probably 70 years or more. died a few weeks ago, contributed a piece published in <i>The New Yorker</i> on
the 2019 75th anniversary of D-Day. In it he said that “Liebling put himself at
ease during the pause, most notably as a messmate. Liebling’s wide range of
reporting often included loving passages about French cooking, but those who
knew him always understood that there was more of the gourmand than of the
gourmet behind this interest. In Rigg’s account, Liebling ate, and ate
steadily, for the better part of three days aboard -and, after Joe [Liebling] had
been safely put ashore, Rigg and his two companions found that there was
nothing left in the larder for their return trip but a box of pilot crackers.” Those
who saw Wes Anderson’s wonderful bit of whimsy, <i>The French Dispatch of the
Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun</i>, will recall that the character of food writer Roebuck
Wright was in large part based on Liebling.<o:p></o:p></span><p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2F7fTt2XXjo2z3cf16lIAKZDkH8tgoq5_51VoHA3U0MvXPY-ypFoMMGK7KWalJXGyWmvGQSLn9h8dwdmeH90bWICqzsuKTquLXmmijwUP6RiTl0gJRJOZ99dGMecf6-k0dFsnG5fOPMHLMkKgILNGhT1aoFjT2o2aroC_3NX2Jg3tcBWxS_LvnvhmEg/s580/ajl15.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="444" data-original-width="580" height="490" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2F7fTt2XXjo2z3cf16lIAKZDkH8tgoq5_51VoHA3U0MvXPY-ypFoMMGK7KWalJXGyWmvGQSLn9h8dwdmeH90bWICqzsuKTquLXmmijwUP6RiTl0gJRJOZ99dGMecf6-k0dFsnG5fOPMHLMkKgILNGhT1aoFjT2o2aroC_3NX2Jg3tcBWxS_LvnvhmEg/w640-h490/ajl15.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;"><br /></span><p></p>

is Bill Walton, above. By chance, on Sunday night, while waiting for my wife to return
from Sydney by train, I happened to watch parts of a movie called <i>Jackie</i>.
This is a 2016 biographical drama in which Natalie Portman plays Jacqueline
Kennedy and the usually superb English actor Richard E. Grant is what seemed to me a rather
wishy-washy Walton, an advisor to both Jackie and John F. Kennedy.<o:p></o:p></span><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;"><i><span style="line-height: 107%;">Time</span></i><span style="line-height: 107%;"> correspondent Walton parachuted

Welsh, through whom, indirectly, he befriended Ernest Hemingway, who
joined Walton in Cherbourg in mid-July 1944 and with Walton covered the first
phase of the Battle of Hürtgen Forest in September-October. Hemingway saved
Walton's life during the fighting after recognising the sound of a German plane
and throwing Walton out of the jeep they were riding in, moments before it was
strafed. <o:p></o:p></span></span></p>

historians, it was revealed that in 1963 Walton had gone on a secret diplomatic
mission to Moscow just eight days after Kennedy's assassination. At the
behest of Robert F. Kennedy, he secretly met with Georgi Bolshakov, a Soviet
journalist and spy who served as a backdoor channel between the Kennedy
administration and the Soviet government. Walton carried a message from Robert
Kennedy: Although Lyndon Johnson was a “sabre-rattling anti-communist”, Kennedy
assured the Soviets that Johnson was nothing more than a “clever time-server
incapable of realising Kennedy's unfinished plans”. Kennedy also informed the
Soviets through Walton that he intended to run for president in 1968, and that
if he won there would be a significant thaw in US-Soviet relations. Walton conveyed the Kennedy family's belief that the President had been the victim of
a vast right-wing conspiracy and not a Soviet assassination.</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 20pt;"><o:p></o:p></span><p></p>Robert Messengerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04366507489948676594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5248447883714712696.post-79385149106865593462022-06-07T11:29:00.001+10:002022-06-07T11:29:31.510+10:0065 Years Using Manual Portable Typewriters<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh690WROp0kehNduPR8lc65aHJ_rVg5o_95e6HydpYkDoyor6UKOHELqHAd5EU2g-7DHsyhgaf8XhlcXGEoxBKD5Zhqd1QtluiWLKBfmsoTfTijrqWtdEVi5DkqvU2GmN8VcQkbdT-vduPHlZ-RMpcR0P0s8Lr99WTAF_Q6qyDtgTNB_cL4vWzZ-j34YA/s745/me65b.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="642" data-original-width="745" height="552" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh690WROp0kehNduPR8lc65aHJ_rVg5o_95e6HydpYkDoyor6UKOHELqHAd5EU2g-7DHsyhgaf8XhlcXGEoxBKD5Zhqd1QtluiWLKBfmsoTfTijrqWtdEVi5DkqvU2GmN8VcQkbdT-vduPHlZ-RMpcR0P0s8Lr99WTAF_Q6qyDtgTNB_cL4vWzZ-j34YA/w640-h552/me65b.PNG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #674ea7; font-family: helvetica;">Taken today, marking 65 years of using manual portable typewriters.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKJr3wxH_d53WWLJs685lbOFLAArn2ppzoWCOL8ZbVoAaezBoTQq16jHZvymqYa2cBK03MHvGRz2wnMObJjdgsZH1LIKPW3MWzeJqt4OCsS0uO7FMSSdqBKR0749DldeehJ1NAlCQKfU4JRGYemvE61qoTuGdlCNZGmM417Mwhbbxc4w3AHDYAbRFa7w/s1600/02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1323" data-original-width="1600" height="530" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKJr3wxH_d53WWLJs685lbOFLAArn2ppzoWCOL8ZbVoAaezBoTQq16jHZvymqYa2cBK03MHvGRz2wnMObJjdgsZH1LIKPW3MWzeJqt4OCsS0uO7FMSSdqBKR0749DldeehJ1NAlCQKfU4JRGYemvE61qoTuGdlCNZGmM417Mwhbbxc4w3AHDYAbRFa7w/w640-h530/02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #674ea7; font-family: helvetica;">Taken in Fremantle in 1982, my 25th year of using manual portable typewriters.</span></div><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;">I remember well the first time I used a manual portable typewriter. It was on this day in 1957, 65 years ago. The typewriter was an Underwood Universal, which was in my father's tailoring establishment at 37 Mawhera Quay in Greymouth, New Zealand. Leading toward the end of the financial year, the family (that is, my siblings and I) went to the store on a chilly Friday evening, back then the end of the working week, to help our father with his annual stocktaking. I, being nine-years-old and the youngest of the five of us, wasn't of much use in this activity, so I was allowed to sit at our father's desk, listen to the Bakelite radio and use the little Underwood typewriter, while my brother and sisters helped check stocks of suits, shirts and ties. The radio was tuned to station 3YZ, and at 7pm on came the "West Coast Hit Parade", a weekly half-hour Top 10 programme hosted by the genial John Pike. How well I recall that rocketing up to No 1 was Elvis Presley's <i>All Shook Up</i>, which pretty much summed up how I felt about seeing one of my own compositions coming up before my eyes in type, for the very first time. There haven't been very many days in the ensuing 65 years that I haven't used a typewriter.</span><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><p></p>Robert Messengerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04366507489948676594noreply@blogger.com7
