Johan Carl Wilhelm ("Charles William") Bechshøft (1859-) travelled extensively between his home in Hellerup, north of Copenhagen in Denmark, and New York between 1906-1925, invariably on typewriter business. No wonder Typewriter Topics came, in 1912, to label him "a famous International Typewriter Man".
He first arrived in the US in April 1906 and found work with the Hammond Typewriter Company, where his talents were spotted by James Bartlett Hammond. Bechshøft was then sent back to Europe, where he represented Hammond and other typewriter brands (including Sun) during the next 20 years.

ReplyDeleteMy family has quite a lot of interesting information about him and many photos and papers relating to his typewriter business - he was general agent with permission to sell the machines all over Europee and Russia.... he travelled a lot, and if anyone is interested, maybe we could establish a connection and exchange some more "shop talk"....

2021 - I am working on a biography and a book about my maternal great grandfather, the "Inernational Typewriter Man" Mr. Charles William Bechshoft (Bechshøft) - grateful that this site is still active, and if there is an interest I would like to contribute
