I would have never thought anyone would have used a jewel bearing for a typewriter escapement gear, and what an odd looking gear that is. What is it off of?
Yes, Words are Winged and Erik have got it - well done! The segment ruby was a bit of a giveaway, perhaps? Steve, I should have photographed the line spacing mechanism too - equally fascinating!
It looks like the escapement for a Smith-Corona portable. The escapement is a series of gears and springs that regulates the carriage movement. Based on the photo of the jewel, I am guessing it's from a Galaxie Deluxe.
I'm not personally familiar with the machine but my first response was an SCM escapement with jeweled bearing. The only such bearing I have heard of outside wrist watches. It looks like plenty of people knew before me. It is a lovely bit of engineering when you see it close-up, so thanks for the anatomy lesson.

ReplyDeleteLine spacing mechanism?
ReplyDeleteCould it be the vaunted "Jeweled Escapement" from a Smith Corona?

ReplyDeleteI have a few Smith Corona typewriters with jeweled escapement bearings. So I say you are working on restoring a Smith-Corona.

ReplyDeleteIn my humble opinion, that mechanism is the carriage return driver of an SCM 250 electric typewriter or one of its variants.
