Our Typewriters Are Burning

Our Federal Government, obediently obeying its puppetmaster, the evil Rupert Murdoch, continues to deny the existence of man-made climate change as we plunge toward another scorching summer season of bushfires. On Saturday my wife attended a fundraising event for one of the many New South Wales villages seriously impacted by last summer’s bushfires, Araluen. The fundraiser was called “Last Summer: Drought, Fire, Flood and Recovery”. There Harriet photographed this old Remington standard typewriter caught up in the flames that raged across NSW, Victoria and Queensland. Glass, including from long neck bottles, had melted and dripped on to the burnt machine. Such a crying shame to see it in this condition.

During this same series of bushfires, this typewriter was damaged when musician and actor Philip Hine's home in Wytaliba was destroyed almost exactly a year ago. Parts of his car melted.

California, of course, has suffered through successive summers of similar bushfire damage. These vintage typewriters were on the shelves of a store hit by the Camp Fire in Paradise north of Sacramento in November 2018. The typewriter below was lost along with lives in the Coffey Park area of Santa Rosa in October 2017.

  1. There's always a tremendous loss from these huge fires. Here in the USA much of cause is from poor forest management by the USDA/US Forest Service not doing enough prescribed burns. That costs money. These huge fires cost much more money. Warming has some to do with it due to drought, but not all the forests and wild lands are burning.
