It's rare when a typewriter appears on the cover of Britain's Literary Review, but this month's issue has this striking illustration by
Chris Riddell. It relates to a review headed 'How the Typewriter Changed
Chinese' by historian Robert Bickers of Jing Tsu's book Kingdom of
Characters: A Tale of Language, Obsession, and Genius in Modern China, published last month.
This cartoon relates to the announcement made in Hartford, Connecticut, on May 15, 1926, by Underwood Typewriter Company president John T. Underwood that his company had built a Chinese language typewriter (see news story below).
The Xinmei Liu illustration which appeared with The New Yorker's
review of the same book, in its January 17 issue.
